Special School Council Meeting - Wednesday, March 15

SPECIAL MEETING!  Our next School Council and Fundraising Society meetings on Wednesday, March 15 at 6:30pm will be a little different.  We are combining our meetings for a special brainstorming session for our extra-curricular programming and fundraising for the 2017-2018 school year.  If you have ideas or would like to have a voice in planning next year's council and fundraising activities this is your chance! The format to allow everyone to share their ideas and thoughts in a low pressure, inclusive way. 

We will ask for the Principal’s and teacher’s reports at the beginning of the meeting and then dive straight into our brainstorming activity. Our first task will be to brainstorm potential activities under the headings below. There will be a short time for discussion and then we will identify priorities for further investigation and discussion at the April meeting.

• Educational/Academic 
• Social Events 
• Grounds (Naturalization, Playground, etc.) 
• Physical Education 
• Cultural/Art/Music 
• Philanthropic/Charitable/Community support 
• Technology/Classroom Enhancements 
• Misc. (for anything that doesn’t fit under the other headings)

March 15th Deadline for CBE Online Math Strategy Survey

The deadline for the CBE online Math Strategy Survey is next week. The CBE is developing a K-12 mathematics strategy and they want to hear from parents/guardians on what they should consider when writing the strategy. Please click on the survey website link to fill out the survey by March 15.

You may want to read the following link from Alberta Education which outlines the specific outcomes from each mathematics strand for each grade level: Alberta K-9 Mathematics Program of Studies with Achievement Indicators. This document will give you a better understanding of what is taught at each grade level.

CBE K-12 Math Strategy Engagement Opportunities

K-12 Math Strategy Engagement

The The CBE is developing a K-12 mathematics strategy and they want to hear from parents/guardians on what they should consider when writing the strategy.

Parents/guardians are vital partners in their children’s learning, and the CBE wants to better understand what parents need from the school and system levels, as well as to learn how they can work better together to support student learning in math.

An online survey will be available from February 22 to March 15. Please register at the CBE Math Strategy website to receive an email to notify you when the survey is available to fill out. In addition to the online survey, there are in-person engagement sessions but many locations have filled up quickly. The on-line survey asks the same questions that are being discussed at the in-person sessions.

CBE's Final Decision for Schools Impacted by New School Openings

The CBE has made a final decision on the changes to the programming of various schools in Calgary. Posted below is a note from the CBE regarding the changes:

Decisions for Area I, II and V Schools Impacted by New School Openings 

The CBE has undertaken an extensive engagement process to understand what is important to students, parents, staff and community members as we make changes to the use of learning space in 27 CBE schools.

After careful review and thoughtful consideration, we are implementing the plans presented at the January 2017 open houses. We have also made decisions about where Woodlands and Woodbine students will attend junior high.

We believe these decisions provide the best use of learning space for our students, schools and communities as a whole. It also balances our values and planning principles with what we heard from our students, staff, parents and community.

Thank you to everyone who participated at in-person sessions, open houses and through online surveys throughout the engagement process. Your thoughtful contributions have made a meaningful difference in decision-making.

What impact does this have on the students that attend Rosemont School?

The impact on Rosemont students will be minimal. The CBE are making changes to the attendance areas, for the 2017/2018 school year, of the two Junior High Schools that Rosemont students feed into: Colonel Irvine and Georges P. Vanier. The decision to change the attendance area was made to address the fact that the schools will be over capacity in the near future. The changes allow for space in the programs offered at the schools.

President's Message - February 2017 Newsletter

Before getting down to business, we’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our teachers and support staff as they continue to provide an exceptional learning environment for our kids throughout the administrative changes this year.  We wish Su-Anne well during her leave and we are grateful to Victoria Barlow for stepping up to provide leadership in the interim.

SPEAKING OF STEPPING UP…We are still looking for a “Key Communicator” to join our council this year.  Do you read the emails we all get from the CBE?  If so, you are already fulfilling the primary responsibility of the role!  This position monitors communication from the CBE, the Alberta School Council Association and Alberta Learning and highlights important information at our council meetings.  We also encourage this member to attend some of the CBE “council of councils” meetings when you think the topics are fitting.  There is no requirement to liaise with the CBE or other institutions, merely to share any information you deem appropriate.

January 2017 Rosemont School Council Minutes

Posted below are the minutes from the Rosemont School Council (RSC) Meeting held on January 18, 2017.

The next School Council meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 15. We encourage parents to attend this meeting since there will be a review of programming offered at the school (eg. residencies, other "extras").

January 2017 Rosemont Fundraising Society Minutes

Posted below are the Minutes and Treasurer’s Report from the Rosemont Fundraising Society (RFS) meeting held on January 18, 2017.

Here are some of the highlights from the meeting:

• Halloween party was under budget.
• Money budgeted for the S.T.E.M. residency (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) has been re-allocated to focus on math resources for the school. 
• Money budgeted for Physical Education support is lower than expected and the balance has been shifted to Science support.
• Jill Carlsen will be the Spolumbo's Fundraiser Coordinator this year. Please contact Jill if you would like to help out with the fundraiser.
• Dan Collins plans to have a meeting next week with a group parents who are interested in looking at what the next steps will be for the playground. If there are other parents who are interested, they are welcome to attend.

The next Fundraising Society meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 15. We ask that parents attend this meeting to discuss ideas of how the fundraising money should be allocated for the next school year (2017/2018).
