September 2017 Rosemont School Council & Fundraising Society Minutes

There was a large turnout of parents for the Rosemont School Council and Fundraising Society meeting last Wednesday evening. Posted below are the highlights from the meetings.

Rosemont School Council

There are still Volunteer Roles to be filled for the 2017-2018 school year. See the Volunteer page on the blog for further information about each of the available positions:

The Welcome Back Breakfast was well attended this year with approximately 275 people served. A big thank you to Rayna Glazenburg for organizing the breakfast and many thanks to all the volunteers volunteering their time. Thank you to Tim Hortons for donating the coffee this year. At the council meeting, there was a suggestion to hold the breakfast on a Tuesday or Thursday next year.

Future Council & Fundraising Meeting dates were selected for the 2017/18 school year. The meetings are held in the school library starting at 6:30 pm. Parents are welcome to attend these informative meetings to get updates from the Principal and information about upcoming events.
  • October 18
  • November 22
  • January 17
  • February 21
  • March 21
  • April 18
  • May 23
A proposal was put forward for free childcare to be offered during the Council and Fundraising meeting times (6:30-8:30 pm) for school aged children (K-Grade 6) in the gym. Parents wanting access to this service will need to RSVP ahead of time before the school council meeting dates. This is a service the Rosemont Council & Fundraising society will provide for parents who want to attend the meetings but require child care. The plan is to offer this service as a trial run for the first two meetings: Oct. 18 and Nov. 22. Based on the child care attendance during the trial run, Council will determine if they will offer the service for the other meetings during the year.

The Rosemont Halloween party this year will be organized by Hanna Cedergren and Sara Stephenson. The party will be held on Saturday, October 28th at the Rosemont Community Hall and will be similar format to last year with a party for younger children from 2:00-4:00 pm and a party for older children from 6:00-9:00 pm. The Halloween party is a joint effort between Rosemont Fundraising Society (RFS) and the Rosemont Coummity Association.

The school will be organizing a Halloween costume parade this year. In the afternoon the children will dress up in their costume and parade around the school. There was a discussion about having the same magic act as previous years or changing it up for this year.

The principal, Mrs. Allison Bobenic, introduced the new music teacher, Carrie Erickson, and the Resource teacher, Corey Arseneault.

Carrie Erickson has a background in both music and Science. She came from Abbeydale School where she taught science and robotics last year. Carrie is currently working with the children on a Terry Fox Song. There was some discussion about utilizing Carrie's background in robotics and incorporating it into the music program at Rosemont.

Corey Arseneault has over 20 years of experience as a Resource teacher. Corey will be working with Ms. Stephenson to provide the Alberta Reads (formerly Calgary Reads) program at Rosemont School. Corey showed a poster about a heritage house in Inglewood, called the Reading Place,
where parents can take their children to a fun space to read books. The program is offered through Alberta Reads and is open from Thursday to Saturday by appointment only.

Ms. Bobenic gave an update about the construction at the school. The outside construction will be done near the end of the month. The interior of the school, common areas, is scheduled to be painted sometime this year. The common areas (library, gymnasium, and hallways) can be painted with accents of the school colors, school motto, and logo. A survey to parents and discussions in the classrooms will occur to select the school colors, motto, and logo/mascot.

The Terry Fox Run this year will be held in the afternoon of September 28th at Confederation park.

Rosemont school has a new website this year!!! The website address is http://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/rosemont/Pages/default.aspx. Mrs. Bobenic mentioned the teachers blogs will not be available through the new website this year but in the meantime school messenger will send out emails giving updates.
